The Greater Bay Area Urban Design Conference
The Role of Expert Committee or Chief Designer for Promoting Urban Design
Abstract
This talk focuses on institutional arrangement for promoting urban design in the rapid new area development and urban regeneration context of the Greater Bay Area. As most of the urban design works in this context are hosted and approved by local public development authorities, an efficient mechanism for balancing design creativity for individual market driven development projects and the guidance of larger scale urban design is important for achieving high quality urban spaces. Cases for appointing an Expert Committee or Chief Designer in GBA cities will be compared to illustrate how they play the roles for bridging urban design with project design. This is followed by discussions for formalizing such mechanisms.
