Waishan Qiu is an HKU-100 Scholar and Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong. Trained as an urban designer, he utilizes imagery big data, computer vision, and GenAI to improve livability, mobility equality, and sustainability. He has worked on data-driven research and smart city projects worldwide (e.g., Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the USA, and China). Before joining HKU, he was an Associate at McKinsey & Company. He obtained a Ph.D. in Regional Science’22 from Cornell, an M.C.P.’17 from MIT, an M.Arch.’14 from UCL, and a B.E.’ 13 from Tongji University. His lab experiences include MIT Center for Advanced Urbanism, MIT Senseable City Lab, and Harvard Evidence for Policy Design. He serves on the editorial board of Humanities and Social Sciences

Communications and Scientific Reports (Springer Nature), and is a reviewer for top journals. A Forbes China 30U30 (2019) honoree, he co-founded three startups on urban entrepreneurship.
